Burton began her career in education as a mathematics teacher for both the Houston Independent School District and Fortbend Independent School District in Texas. After teaching for six years, she began working as an administrator in the role as Crisis Administrator, for the Metropolitan School District of Washington Township in Indianapolis, Indiana. She served in this capacity for 9 years.
As a Crisis Administrator, she worked with the administrative and counseling team to develop an intervention program to decrease the number of minor incident suspensions. Dr. Burton partnered her high school with the local Goodwill store where students were allowed to volunteer their time instead of being suspended and removed from the classroom environment. Additionally, Dr. Burton provided opportunities and coordinated the delivery of food resources for students throughout the school year. Lastly, in the area of academic intervention support, she developed an after school tutoring program where she assisted students who were identified as needing tier 2 or tier 3 mathematics support.

Later, she began her next quest in education as an Assistant Principal of Curriculum and Instruction, with Indianapolis Public Schools and subsequently Culver City Unified School District, Culver City, California. Some of the highlighted areas where Dr. Burton worked with teachers and counselors as an Assistant Principal included making sure students were enrolled in the grade level appropriate courses, designed the master schedule, provided instructional professional development for teachers, observed teachers instruction and provided feedback, and supported families with IEPs and 504s.

Dr. Burton is passionate about mitigating the opportunity gap by facilitating courageous conversations and serving as a change agent with schools, teachers, administrators and families to ensure equity, diversity and inclusion.
